Susann Brown has been teaching for the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) Division since 2000. Brown has worked in the field of Urban Search & Rescue since 2000 and has spent over 10 years as a volunteer with a search and rescue team in the Dallas area before joining TEEX Urban Search & Rescue in 2000.
Brown currently teaches the Canine Search Management and Disaster Canine Search Specialist courses and also serves as a Search Team Manager and a Canine Search Specialist on Texas Task Force 1, the statewide urban search and rescue team. Brown is also one of the primary instructors for the Wide Area Search course and was heavily involved in the development of the curriculum for the course.
Brown says she has experienced many different scenarios during her nine years in training and is constantly learning something new. “I find that I learn a great deal from the students that add to my ability to do my job. Whether it’s a canine training technique or a new approach to managing a disaster incident, the knowledge and experience students bring to a class enrich the course for everyone,” Brown said.
In addition to teaching courses at Disaster City®, Brown was dispatched as a search member during the March 2000 Fort Worth tornadoes and the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks in 2001. She also aided in the Columbia Recovery and most recently in Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Dolly, and Ike.
When she is not busy serving and teaching, she enjoys kayaking and spending time at her lake cabin with her family and working with dogs.
