Course Description


FSA103 - Bloodstain Pattern Analysis I - 40.00 Hours

Prerequisites

Participants must be licensed or certified peace officers with a current commission or non-commissioned personnel assigned to investigate/process crime scenes.

Description

The Bloodstain Pattern Analysis I course is designed for those who investigate crime scenes containing blood evidence such as assaults and death investigations, as well as those who process bloodstained evidentiary items. The course provides participants with basic knowledge of bloodstain pattern analysis, including methods and skills for the interpretation of bloodstain evidence at crime scenes and on evidentiary items. The participants learned skills will allow them to make determinations such as the relative positions of the victim or suspect, the nature of the force and object used, and the approximate number of blows struck. Course instruction is through lecture and case review with emphasis on experiments and practical application.

    Audience

    Law enforcement investigators and non-commissioned personnel assigned to crime scene investigation and reconstruction.

    Other Information

    Participants will be required to conduct field exercises throughout the week and should dress appropriately for both indoor and outdoor crime scene scenarios.

    Required Materials
    The following items are necessary for participation:

    • Scientific calculator
    • Clear plastic 12-inch ruler scaled in tenths and metric gradations
    • Mechanical pencil

    The following items are suggested for participation:

    • Camera for documentation of created exemplars
    • Fingerprint glass or magnifying glass

    For participation in experiments and practical applications, students are encouraged to wear older, comfortable clothing for the week of instruction
