This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to operate fire apparatus, with emphasis on industrial apparatus and related systems. Special emphasis is placed on pump operations using drafting and industrial water systems. This course is targeted toward new pump operators, as well as those with limited experience.


There are no prerequisites for this course.


Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)


  • Regular station duty wear for fire field activities.
  • Office attire for classroom sessions.
  • You may not wear to any class or field activity
    • shorts
    • sleeveless shirts
    • open-toed shoes


Responsibilities of the Apparatus Operator+Emergency Vehicle Operation+Spotting the Apparatus+Pump Theory+Pump Types+Tandem Hookups+Relief Valves+Governors+Friction Loss Formulas+Friction Loss Rules-of-Thumb+Effective Fire Streams+Hose Loads+Hose Lays+Using Large Diameter Hose+Operating the Pump+Drafting Operations+Tandem Pumping+Relay Pumping+Elevating platforms and Aerial Operations+Foam Truck Operations+Preventive Maintenance+Troubleshooting during Operations


All industrial emergency response personnel, including fire prevention, suppression, control, and safety personnel.
