Honolulu Fire Department will offer TEEX HazMat Operations training

”NERRTCCOLLEGE STATION - TEEX’s National Emergency Response and Recovery Training Center (NERRTC) is collaborating with Honolulu Fire Department to provide training in Operational Response to Hazardous Materials Incidents for emergency responders and recruit firefighters in Hawaii.

Honolulu Fire Department has become an approved TEEX Cooperative Learning Center (CLC) and will offer up to three deliveries each year of PER-212 – Operational Level Response to HazMat/WMD Incidents. The DHS/FEMA-funded course is offered at no charge to emergency responders through the Homeland Security National Training Program. Under the agreement, TEEX will provide a lead instructor and Honolulu Fire Department will provide the other instructors and the necessary equipment, such as self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

NERRTC recently trained nine instructors with the Honolulu Fire Department, who are now qualified to teach the course. The Train-the-Trainer program was conducted by Dan Rand, Billy Rhoads and Kent Gardner.

“Typically, TEEX is only able to offer up to two deliveries in Hawaii each year,” said Jesse Watkins, Operations Director for NERRTC. “This agreement will allow us to offer additional deliveries in other locations, and help push TEEX closer to the goal of 300,000 participants by 2030. We have a similar agreement with Paradise Valley Community College in Phoenix.”
