CyberCamp 2018

COLLEGE STATION – Get a jump start on a career in computer science, engineering or cybersecurity. In June, the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) is offering its 5th Cyber Innovation Camp for students entering the 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade.
The five-day program will introduce teens to the computing and cybersecurity industry, and students will receive their own Raspberry Pi computer to learn programming, cybersecurity, electronics and sensors, engineering design, and more.
Two sessions of the day camp will be held June 10-14 and June 24-28 in College Station. The camp meets from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day, and lunch will be provided. A maximum of 25 students will be admitted to each session, so individual campers will get plenty of hands-on practice.
They will have the opportunity to learn to program their Raspberry Pi to control lights and robotic cars, create music, detect and monitor motion or temperature and humidity. They will assign actions to buttons or switches, and even train a camera for facial recognition.
Hands-on activities will introduce students to the power of programming, said Diane Cornwell, Camp Coordinator and Cybersecurity Training Coordinator with TEEX Knowledge Engineering. Students will be encouraged to explore and experiment with sensors and electronics and think outside the box to apply these technologies, she added.
Guided lessons and learning activities will be led by IT professionals and software engineers. Guest speakers will introduce engineering design, real-world applications of the skills they are learning, and cybersecurity concepts such as secure programming, social engineering and Wi-Fi spoofing.
Each student will receive a Raspberry Pi computer kit, sensors and electronics, which they can take home at the end of the week to continue to explore and experiment with the concepts they have learned.
The camp fee is $490. Registration ends May 31, 2019.
