For the first time ever, TEEX has two employees who have been honored with the prestigious Regents Fellows Service Award. TEEXans receiving the 2004 award are Deputy Director Dr. Arturo Alonzo and Director of Operations for Homeland Security Bill May. They were recognized by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents on Jan. 27. The annual Regents Fellows Service Award is the highest honor given by the Board of Regents and recognizes senior-level professionals who are committed to public service.
Dr. Alonzo was honored for his long career of service to the citizens of Texas and his leadership in TEEX as both deputy director and chief financial officer, which has allowed the agency to expand its outreach into many new areas and enhance its national and international reputation as the premier training agency. His actions and guidance throughout 25 years of service have led to funding for many TEEX activities that directly address the critical need for training the state’s workforce, including programs for the citizens of San Antonio, and promote economic development within the state.
May was recognized for his dedication to preparing and equipping emergency responders in Texas and the nation to meet the challenges of a changing world where the safety and security of citizens may be put at risk by terrorists using weapons of mass destruction. Through his efforts and persistence, communities throughout Texas and the nation are better prepared, better trained and better equipped to deal with all types of disasters than at any time in history.
May joined TEEX in 1998 to direct the agency’s new National Emergency Response and Rescue Training Center, which has developed a national reputation for quality and set the benchmark that others emulate. Before being named Director of Operations for Homeland Security, he also managed the development of the Domestic Preparedness Strategy for the State of Texas, which has served as the blueprint for all 50 states and the U.S. territories.
In 2003, the Regents Fellows Service Award was presented to Pat Barrett, associate division director of TEEX's Emergency Services Training Institute.
