COLLEGE STATION –Sue Shahan of the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) has been named one of the 2005 Outstanding Women in Texas Government, an award which recognizes women who have helped shape Texas by contributing their talents and skills to state service.

Shahan serves as associate agency director for internal services for TEEX, which is a member of The Texas A&M University System. She is one of five women who will be honored at a March 18 ceremony, which will include a keynote address by Texas Supreme Court Justice Harriet O’Neill.

With 32 years of service to the state of Texas, Shahan is being honored for Outstanding Professional Development. During her 16 years with TEEX, Shahan has continuously expanded her skills and level of responsibility to reach her current position, in which she oversees TEEX Human Resources, Network & Information Services, Communications & Marketing Services, and Digital Imaging & Copy Center departments.

When Shahan joined TEEX as personnel officer in 1988, her objective was to establish the agency’s first human resources office. As a one-person department, she developed the first employee training program for TEEX and led the agency into the computer age with e-mail and the Internet. After two years as personnel officer, Shahan was promoted to assistant agency director – the first woman to hold such a position within TEEX.

In 1999, she was promoted to her current position of associate agency director. Shahan manages all compensation and employee relations issues for TEEX’s workforce of more than 1,000 employees nationwide, as well as overseeing a team of five human resources professionals who coordinate the agency’s benefits program, training initiatives and hiring practices.

During her rise through the agency’s ranks, Shahan has never forgotten that any organization is only as good as its employees. She values people – their skills, experiences, personalities and differences. “Each person brings something different and uniquely their own to TEEX. We all need to remember and appreciate those differences,” she says.

Throughout the years, Shahan has continued to invest in her own professional development, while also championing the growth of her own employees and those throughout the agency. She has participated in more than 15 professional development seminars while at TEEX in a never-ending quest to enhance her skills and even better serve the agency. She participated in the highly regarded Leadership Texas program in 2002 and in the Governor’s Executive Development Program in 2004.

TEEX offers hands-on, customized training, exercises, technical assistance and technology transfer services impacting Texas and beyond.
