55 from Scotland respond to Disaster City™

COLLEGE STATION – Fifty-five emergency responders from Scotland are participating in a structural collapse course at the Texas Engineering Extension Service’s Disaster City™ this week, which culminates in an exercise simulating a terrorist incident on Friday, May 6.

Course attendees include 48 urban search and rescue specialists from throughout Scotland, as well as seven visiting instructors. Officials from the Fire Services Division for the Scottish Executive Justice Department are also observing the course this week as part of their first trip to Disaster City™.

The Scottish responders are learning topics such as structural engineering systems and building construction as related to disaster situations. They are also performing actual rescue operational procedures such as structural breaching and breaking, lifting and moving, and emergency building shoring.

TEEX has trained more than 600 emergency responders from the United Kingdom at Disaster City™ over the past two years. In addition to providing urban search and rescue training for emergency responders worldwide, TEEX serves as the sponsoring agency for Texas Task Force 1, one of 28 national urban search and rescue teams under the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Disaster City™, nestled near the Texas A&M University campus, is a 52-acre training facility designed to deliver the full array of skills and techniques needed by emergency response professionals. The facility features full-size collapsible structures that replicate community infrastructure, including a strip mall, office building, industrial complex, assembly hall/theater, single family dwelling, train derailment and three rubble piles.
