Texas Task Force 1 Activated for Hill Country Flooding

3/30/2007 12:00 AM

Texas Task Force 1 deployed water rescue teams Friday afternoon at the request of the Governor’s Division of Emergency Management to support emergency response officials in the Hill Country following severe flooding in the area.

Weather officials report that the system currently over Central Texas has stalled, dropping 6-8 inches of rain in some locations. The weather system is expected to stay stationary over the area through Saturday.

Texas Task Force 1 is in process of positioning 35 water rescue specialists and equipment in San Antonio and Austin. In addition to several boat teams, four helicopter rescue crews are split between the two locations.

Sponsored by the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) under The Texas A&M University System, Texas Task Force 1 coordinates the state’s water rescue program and also serves as Texas’ only statewide urban search and rescue team.
