UPDATE: Texas Task Force 1 responding in South Texas

7/24/2008 12:00 AM

Although answering numerous calls for service, members of Texas Task Force 1 thankfully have not encountered widespread structural damage in the Rio Grande Valley; however, there continues to be significant flooding in some areas.

TX-TF1 currently has swift water teams located in several South Texas counties and performed numerous rescues overnight and continue to do so today, assisting local officials, as needed.

Latest activity from Texas Task Force 1:

Cameron County: More than 80 people rescued and assisted, including 63 (46 were residents) from the Twin Brook South Nursing Home during early Thursday morning hours. No additional details of residents or conditions are available.

Hidalgo County: Seven people rescued during early Thursday morning hours

South Padre Island: Minimal damage observed – broken windows, small debris, awnings down, no major structural damage

Texas Task Force 2: Arrived at TX-TF1 HQ in College Station late Wednesday and departed for Kingsville this morning

Under the coordination of the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX), aerial assessments of affected areas of South Texas continue to be conducted by Texas Military Forces and U.S. Coast Guard aircraft.
