College Station, TX – The Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) today announced plans to immediately reduce staffing at the National Emergency Response and Rescue Training Center (NERRTC). Forty-two people are affected by the announcement, which includes both salaried and hourly staff members. TEEX attributes the layoffs to significant funding reductions from the state.

“We regret the need to reduce employment. We understand the disruptions that layoffs cause in both personal lives and our community,” said Gary Sera, Agency Chief Executive Officer. “This decision came only after many hours of analysis and has been the most difficult decision of my career. I have tremendous fondness and respect for these good people.”

The agency will look at additional ways to further reduce administrative costs and streamline operational efficiencies to best serve the citizens of the state of Texas. In today’s economy other agencies have faced similar challenges and continue to focus on operational efficiency. TEEX will continue to deliver needed services through diversification and enhanced operation. Due diligence in these difficult times will ensure the viability of present and future state programs.

Federally funded programs administered by NERRTC are not affected by this funding reduction.

The National Emergency Response and Rescue Training Center (NERRTC), was established in 1998 to enhance the capabilities of emergency responders and local officials nationwide to prepare for, respond to, and recover from catastrophic events resulting from natural events, man-made accidents, or terrorist attacks.
