  • ESTI managers attend national fire conference

Emmitsburg, MD — Pat Barrett and Mike Wisby, Program Managers from ESTI, participated in a recent national conference of senior fire training officials. The U.S. Fire Administration’s (USFA) National Fire Academy (NFA) sponsored a Training Resources and Data Exchange (TRADE) Conference at its campus in Emmitsburg, Maryland, November 3-5, 2002. The USFA is part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The conference included regional network meetings and presentations and workshops on such topics as fire officer development, leadership for the future, and emergency services challenges for the future. Three train-the-trainer programs were presented: Leadership and Ethics, Rescue Systems Curriculum, and Firefighter Line of Duty Death and Injury. All conference participants received the complete training package for each of these three programs.

The NFA created TRADE in 1984 to provide a regionally based networking system that fosters the exchange of fire-related training information and resources among and between the Federal, State, and local levels of government.

Members of the national network include the directors of the 50 State fire service training systems and senior executive training officers from the Nation’s 150 largest metropolitan fire departments.

The TRADE network operates through a regionally based system corresponding to the 10 Federal geographic regions of the country. Each regional network meets periodically with its membership and a national meeting is held at the NFA biennially.

Regional network members work together to identify fire and emergency services training needs within their region and to find available resources to meet those needs. The TRADE network helps identify training programs within regions, replicates successful procedures and training materials, and makes packages available to departments with similar needs.

Congress established the NFA in 1974 as part of the USFA and serves as the Federal focal point for fire service training and education. The Academy offers on-campus, resident courses to enhance the professional development of fire service personnel and others engaged in fire prevention and control activities. NFA supports and supplements local and State training efforts nationwide through its off-campus programs.
