Though he comes to TEEX from Birmingham, Ala., Jason Cook is no stranger to the state of Texas, Texas A&M University and Bryan-College Station. The new communications director for TEEX grew up in Southeast Texas and married into a family full of Aggies.
Despite attending Mississippi State University, where he majored in communication with an emphasis in public relations, Cook was never able to escape his Texas upbringing. During his first year working in the athletic media relations department at Mississippi State, the school welcomed the arrival of former Texas A&M football coach Jackie Sherrill. Then through his job, Cook met his wife, Leann, who is a graduate of Texas A&M.
Cook later moved to Birmingham and joined HealthSouth Corp., the nation’s largest healthcare provider, as a manager in the publications group. By the end of his seven-year tenure at HealthSouth, he had moved up to assistant vice president for media and communications.
“I have been looking for a solid, stable organization where I could roll up my sleeves and get to work,” he says. “Everyone says positive things about TEEX and the type of work we do. It’s a complex organization with intrinsic challenges, but TEEX has a solid foundation from which we can develop new ways to promote awareness of the agency and its services.”
And he is excited about returning to his Texas roots.
“This is really a homecoming for us,” he says. “I definitely think have found everything that we were looking for.”
