TEEX is partnering with Texas State University on Project Protect, a training program that helps school districts prevent, prepare, respond and recover from acts of violence. The state of Texas, through the Office of the Governor, has funded a pilot project for the Laredo Independent School District.
More than 800 Laredo teachers and administrators participated in July training sessions. These sessions focused on vulnerability and risk assessment, emergency operation plans, incident command systems, drug impairment and behavior recognition and disruptive student management.
Other sessions in August will include a mock mass shooting at a Laredo high school, aftermath recovery training and student awareness sessions. A day-long drill scheduled for September will involve school officials, teachers and public safety officers in a mock attack on the school.
On Aug. 11, Project Protect was included in a New York Times article, “Texas town is unnerved by violence in Mexico.” To read the article, visit: New York Times. (Requires free registration.)
