  • Texas Task Force 1 demobilizes from Houston floods

COLLEGE STATION — The Governor’s Division of Emergency Management demobilized Texas Task Force 1’s swiftwater rescue teams early Wednesday due to reduced severe weather conditions in Houston and local officials’ capability to manage the flood response.

The six swiftwater rescue teams had remained at Texas Task Force 1’s headquarters in College Station since being activated Monday by Gov. Rick Perry. The teams used the two-day deployment for additional training in rescue techniques, global positioning systems, satellite communications and boat operations.

In addition to the swiftwater rescue teams, Texas Task Force 1 deployed a search and rescue command component to the Houston Disaster District headquarters and the Harris County Emergency Operations Center. All told, 50 Texas Task Force 1 members participated in the Houston flood deployment.

The Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) serves as the sponsoring agency for Texas Task Force 1. The team functions as a statewide urban search and rescue and water rescue asset under direction of the Governor’s Division of Emergency Management. Texas Task Force 1 consists of nearly 300 emergency responders from 60 organizations across Texas.
