  • Blinn Fire Science Program adds hands-on training

BRENHAM – Blinn College Board of Trustees approved expanding the college’s fire science program to include training at the Texas Engineering Extension Service’s world-renowned Brayton Fire Training Field in College Station. The board approved a memorandum of agreement with TEEX, a member of the Texas A&M University System, for 2006-07.

The partnership allows Blinn fire science students to receive 12 weeks of practical training with firefighter props, equipment and apparatus with TEEX in addition to the usual classroom instruction in fire protection, life safety and program management. The agreement also allows TEEX, for the first time, to offer college credit and financial aid to its fire academy students.

“This new partnership agreement should be of great interest to persons wishing to complete a two-year degree program who are just beginning their fire science careers or are veteran firefighters,” Blinn Technical and Workforce Education Dean Guadalupe Reyes, Jr., said. “Together this effort raises the level of professionalism required in many of today’s jobs.”

With completion of the classroom and field work, students will be eligible to take the state exam to become certified firefighters.

“The partnership between Blinn’s Fire Science Program and TEEX will provide an unmatched combination of classroom instruction in a college setting and hands-on, skills-driven emergency response training,” said Chief Les Bunte, who heads TEEX’s Emergency Services Training Institute.

“Firefighters will benefit from a two-year degree and the additional career enhancement opportunities generated through this innovative agreement.”

TEEX, which trains more than 81,000 emergency responders from all 50 states and 45 countries each year, has been providing fire training since 1929 when the State Firemen’s and Fire Marshals’ Association of Texas selected Texas A&M as the site for a permanent firefighter training school. TEEX’s Recruit Firefighter Academy has trained more than 3,500 certifiable firefighters since 1971.
