Only days after the Texas Engineering Extension Service, or TEEX, coordinated the state’s largest-ever urban search and rescue response, the agency is now tasked with coordinating a demobilization event of equal size.
Beginning Wednesday, TEEX-sponsored Texas Task Force 1 (TX-TF1), Dallas-based Texas Task Force 2 and the state’s other rescue assets will leave San Antonio and Weslaco and return to College Station, which is home to TX-TF1.
All 233 responders will stay in College Station Wednesday night, engage in a full day of after-action reviews on Thursday and leave for their respective homes on Friday, according to TX-TF1 Director Bob McKee.
“The state’s emergency plan was thoroughly tested, even if our coast was spared a direct strike by Hurricane Dean,” McKee said.
This was also an excellent opportunity to interact and train with fellow responders from other agencies. Everything we’ve learned through this will make our next unified response even better.”

Texas Task Force 1 is a state and federal urban search and rescue team comprised of more than 300 personnel representing more than 60 jurisdictions and agencies from across the state of Texas. Texas Task Force 1, which also coordinates statewide requests for swiftwater rescue, has operated one of the top water rescue teams in the nation since 2000. Texas Task Force 1 has deployed to swiftwater and flooding incidents across the state and recently returned from a deployment for Tropical Storm Erin. In 2005, Texas Task Force 1 assisted with rescuing more than 13,000 New Orleans residents in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
