Paramedic Class – Evening Offering

Course Description

Prerequisites

Applicants should meet the following physical requirements:

• Should be able to lift and carry 125 pounds

To complete your application process to the Paramedic program, you must do the following:

• If you wish to utilize a third party payee (VA, Meritize, Sallie Mae, etc.), please visit our Funding Services page and arrange for payment before moving to the next step in the registration process.
• Pay the $75 non-refundable application fee through the TEEX website
• Be a high school graduate or passed a GED test
• Hold a current certification for EMT, EMT-Intermediate, or Advanced EMT (AEMT)
• Complete the Participant Enrollment Agreement. You will need to either:
• download the file and electronically sign
• print the file, physically sign, and scan the document
• Upload all three documents, in as few files as possible, to your student portal account on the TEEX website within a maximum 14 days of paying your class application fee. (This deadline may be reduced as the class start date approaches.)

You will be contacted by a staff member of the EMS Program to obtain your final class payment and to complete your registration process.

Once you have paid your final class payment, you are officially registered in the program. At that point, applicants must complete the following:

• Set up an account at CastleBranch, which will cost $90, to submit the following:
• Current EMT, EMT-Intermediate, or AEMT certification
• A current CPR Certification (Basic Life Support for Provider certification provided by American Heart Association or American Red Cross only)
• A copy of a drivers license or form of government-issued identification
• Health insurance card with student name or letter of eligibility from insurance carrier
• High school diploma or GED certificate
• A criminal background check covering the last seven years that will be initiated by CastleBranch upon account creation and payment
• A drug screening coordinated through CastleBranch upon account creation
• Proof of the following vaccines:
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella: two vaccines or positive titer
  • Varicella (chicken pox): two vaccines or positive titer
  • Hepatitis B: three vaccines or positive titer (series in process with two vaccinations completed will be accepted)
  • Tuberculosis (TB): one of the following within the last six months:
    • 1 step TB skin test
    • QuantiFERON Gold blood test
    • T-spot blood test
    • Interferon – Gamma Release Assay (IGRA) blood test
    • Negative check x-ray with physician documentation stating you are TB free
  • Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Tdap) vaccination within last ten years
  • Flu: vaccination for the current flu season
  • COVID-19 vaccination
  • Meningitis: proof within the last five years if under the age of of thirty (additional information about meningitis)

• Students will be contacted by the class instructor with information about how to access and complete the required co-requisite modules:

  • Medication Calculations

Requirements for successful completion

• Attendance
  • Class attendance is an essential part of the education process and participants in TEEX courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. This course requires participants to attend a minimum of 90% of the didactic hours as a component of successful course completion.
  • Participants who miss 48 hours or more of the EMT course may be dismissed.
  • During the course, your instructor will review any additional attendance requirements, for example a field exercise that cannot be missed.
  • Participants that miss 48 consecutive hours without communication to the instructor and/or training manager will be administratively withdrawn.
• Grading
  • Complete the required online co-requisite modules by the stated deadline.
  • Successful completion of the lecture/lab portion (EMS130/EMS135) of the Paramedic program includes the following:
    • Maintain an average of 70% or higher for lecture/lab portion (exams, assignments, quizzes, and homework).
    • Score a minimum of 70% on the comprehensive final exam.
    • Pass all in-lab skill verifications required for clinical authorization.
    • Maintain a positive Affective Evaluation throughout the EMS Program.
    • Complete all clinical and field internship hours prior to the final day of the course.
  • Successful completion of the clinical/field portion (EMS136) of the EMT program includes the following:
    • Complete all requirements outlined in the Paramedic Student Handbook for the clinical and field internships.
    • Summative psychomotor scenario conducted / evaluated by the lead instructor and/or staff.
    • Summative psychomotor exam.
    • Complete all documentation properly using the FISDAP scheduler.
  • Successful completion of the Capstone portion of the program includes:
    • Attend 120 EMS hours with a TEEX-approved capstone EMS provider.
    • Act in the role of team lead on at least twenty transports, twenty of which must meet ALS criteria.
    • Correctly record and document all patient contacts and dispatched calls.
    • Successful completion of the captstone summatvie affective evaluation.

Attendance Requirements

Class attendance is an essential part of the education process and participants in TEEX courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. This course requires participants to attend a minimum of 90% of the didactic hours as a component of successful course completion. This means you are allowed to miss a maximum of 16 hours of classroom time to still be eligible to continue to the next phase of training. During the course, your instructor will review any additional attendance requirements, for example a field exercise that cannot be missed.

Note: Live Online Instructor-Led (webinar) courses are not eligible for TCOLE credit.

Details

This course meets 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. 

The total hours for the class are 1262 hours and are divided into:

• 150 hours of online co-requisite*
• 512 hours of didactic/lecture
• 240 hours of clinical rotations
• 240 hours of ambulance experiences
• 120 hours of Capstone EMS Internship 

The hospital and ambulance rotations begin during the classroom portion of the class. You will be expected to complete clinical, and ambulance internship requirements on days not attending class.
