  • Computer-based health care training saves time

TEEX has teamed up with HealthStream to provide customized health care and hospice compliance training programs to employees of hospitals and other health care organizations throughout the state. Since the program began in 1998, the training has reached more than 6,000 health care workers at 41 health care facilities.

Funded by grants from the Skills Development Fund of the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), the program uses computer-based training modules for a wide array of employees, including nursing staff, technicians, maintenance, service and administrative support. The training modules are now available over the Internet from computers located at the health care facility, making the training convenient for employees and affordable for the organizations. TWC has called the initiative “one of the state’s most innovative training programs.”

The course content and structure of the individual modules help to facilitate learning, while meeting requirements under the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The modules were developed by m3 The Healthcare Learning Company, which was purchased by HealthStream last year.

TEEX grant coordinator Jonathan Dikes says that many of the hospital employees had their first exposure to computers through this training.

“Many of our employees had not had the opportunity to use a computer at all and were very excited once they found out they could operate one,” said Yvonne Moseley of Wilson Memorial Hospital in Floresville. “Of course, some were afraid initially, but the program proved to be very user-friendly.

“Having the program available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year enables employees to complete programs as time allows. They can also leave a program at any time and pick up where they left off,” Moseley added.

“The system has allowed us to give the employees more freedom in meeting their yearly education requirements,” said Robin Duderstadt of Hill Country Memorial Health System in Fredricksburg. “It has also allowed us to save time, both for the employees and for the staff members who would have been tied up hour after hour preparing and presenting the required education. We feel that the time and monetary investment required to keep the system in our hospital is time and money well spent.

“Our staff is pleased with the flexibility and also with the content,” Duderstadt added. “We feel that our staff is now truly learning something from the annual education instead of just going through the motions.”
