  • Governor appoints Parker to advisory committee

Gov. Rick Perry has appointed Billy Parker, program supervisor with TEEX Urban Search and Rescue, to the Emergency Medical First Responders Star of Texas Award Advisory Committee. The 78th Texas Legislature established the Star of Texas Award in memory of firefighters, peace officers and emergency medical first responders killed or seriously wounded in the line of duty.

Parker, who has been with TEEX for 21 years, received the George Hughes Award in 1996 for outstanding performance in the fire training and education field. Before joining TEEX, he worked as a firefighter and paramedic for the College Station Fire Department. With 25 years of experience as a first responder and as a member of the Texas Task Force One, Parker is one of three members who will help design and select recipients of the awards.

The Peace Officer Star of Texas Award advisory committee and the Firefighters Star of Texas Award advisory committee also have three members each.

The first Star of Texas Awards will be presented on Sept. 11, 2004, and will become part of the state’s annual events in memory of those who died in the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
