  • Hach donation enhances water and wastewater training

COLLEGE STATION — Portable laboratory kits donated to the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) by Hach Company of Loveland, Colo., will enhance water and wastewater training offered by the agency across the state.

“This partnership with HACH will take our training to the next level and augment our mobile Water and Wastewater hands-on training lab,” said Paul Muraca, program manager of TEEX’s Engineering, Utilities and Public Works Training Institute.

TEEX has received 14 “Direct Reading Environmental Laboratory” kits, which include a pH meter, turbidity meter, chlorine analyzer and other equipment and chemicals. Hach also donated two online analyzers for analyzing chlorine and turbidity levels in the drinking water treatment process and an oxidation reduction potential meter.

The field kits will be used for training in surface and ground water lecture courses, as well as water and wastewater laboratory classes, including those classes taught in the mobile water and wastewater laboratory. Six instructors attended a training session to learn how to incorporate the laboratory kits into courses for water and wastewater operators.

“It is exciting to add this capability to TEEX water and wastewater training,” said instructor Keith McLeroy. “The kits will allow the instructor to not only demonstrate the laboratory technique and testing, but also will allow course participants to get hands-on experience performing the laboratory procedures.

“Many of our class participants have never had the opportunity to run an analysis using advanced instrumentation, so this will be a new experience for them. These kits will also allow the instructor to emphasize the importance of properly analyzing the water and wastewater to ensure it meets all regulated standards.”
