The Center for Marine Training and Safety in Galveston has acquired a new Helicopter Underwater Egress Trainer (HUET). This new generation HUET system offers realistic safety and survival training in underwater egress.
The trainer is capable of creating a very realistic training scenario. It impacts the water at 10 miles per hour and can disorient the occupant similar to a real emergency. It is excellent for hands-on training needed by students in sea survival and helicopter egress and safety courses.
The unit was designed by John Ryan, president of Alexander/Ryan Marine & Safety Co. of Houston. Similar to much larger systems used throughout the world, this HUET can be transported to remote training sites without a lot of outside support.
The trainer recently returned to Galveston after a trip to Houma, La., where it was used to train employees of Trans-Ocean Sedco-Forex Drilling.
