”FireCOLLEGE STATION - Thirty-four fire service leaders completed the capstone Fire Service Chief Executive Officer (FSCEO) leadership certificate program, held Oct. 9-13 on the Texas A&M University campus. The professional development program is delivered by the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) in cooperation with professors from Texas A&M’s Mays Business School. The program is designed to sharpen leadership skills of executives within the fire service.

The new graduates are company officers and chief officers from fire departments across the state and Joint Base San Antonio Fire & Emergency Services. Three international graduates are fire chiefs for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.

The program covers the challenges of leadership, finance, ethics, and strategic management and planning. Attendees also learn about creativity and innovation, managing change and transition, media relations and stress management. Nearly 300 fire service leaders have completed the program since its inception.

"As a veteran fire officer, I understand the unique needs of fire chiefs and other command staff,” said Robert Barron, Training Manager with the Emergency Services Training Institute.  “Our goal is to build programs and courses that improve the success of these executives in managing day-to-day fire department operations and to enhance their career growth. FSCEO and similar programs are growing in demand as they become requirements for promotion and/or to get hired at the command level of an emergency service organization."

The next Fire Service Chief Executive Officer program will be held May 14-18, 2018.
