When more than 4,000 high school students gathered in Forth Worth in April for the Texas SkillsUSA-VICA Championships, TEEX was there. As a sponsor of Texas SkillsUSA-VICA, TEEX is supporting the state’s future business, industry and community leaders, said TEEX Director Dr. Kem Bennett. Like TEEX, SkillsUSA-VICA believes in the value of skilled employees and their training.

SkillsUSA-VICA is a national organization of 250,000 youth preparing for careers in industry and training in more than 100 different trade and industrial occupations. They are enrolled in career and technology education programs so they can enter the workplace with marketable skills and/or go on to colleges or trade schools. The organization focuses on personal development in citizenship, leadership and character.

Texas SkillsUSA-VICA has more than 15,000 members, most of whom are high school students enrolled in Career and Technology Education programs in school districts across the state. Winners of local and regional competitions advance to the state contests, which includen 51 skill competitions, 25 leadership competitions, 51 technical information written contests and thousands of student exhibits.

“One of the critical concerns voiced by our clients is the fact that many young people leave our public schools without the skills necessary to become productive employees,” Bennett told students at the Championships in April. “These are the youth that have not had the SkillsUSA-VICA experience. The members of SkillsUSA-VICA are the lucky high school and post-secondary school students. They have selected their career path and they are receiving the training and support required to help them become valued employees and the future business/industry leaders of tomorrow.

“The public needs to hear about SkillsUSA-VICA and realize, like I do, that you are the future of Texas. You are our state’s future business, industry and community leaders. You and your fellow members are the individuals who will guide Texas through the 21st century. I can assure you that TEEX will be there to offer its support to you and your advisors today and in the future.”
