Butler changed her life by participating in the Microenterpise Development Program (MDP), an 18-month program of the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX), initially funded by the Texas Workforce Commission. The MDP provides participants with entrepreneurial training and access to capital that is necessary for economic self-sufficiency.
Before taking the course, Butler was a technician at Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation and knew she wanted to start her own beauty supply store. However, she didn’t know where to start. As fortune would have it, one day a customer told her about the MDP program. She decided this could be the way to accomplish her dream.
As one of 23 participants in the MDP program Butler learned how to create and operate a successful business. She received instruction about business management, business start-up and launch, and growth processes. She said she learned how to successfully run a business, make a profit and be independent.
“The MDP gave me a plan that I could see. Like making a cake, I could estimate the ingredients and not know what the results would be or use a recipe and get exactly what I wanted. I could finally understand what I was doing,” Butler said.
During the course she did market research about beauty stores and found that it was a big business area. She discovered that beauty supplies are always in demand.
“Women always want beauty products. It’s not just a trend,” she commented. After completing the program she opened her own beauty supply store, CB Hair and Beauty Mart.
Butler’s store not only sells beauty products, it also carries jewelry, clothes, floral arrangements and much more. She’s been so successful she’s hired two full-time employees and one part-time employee and added a salon to her store.
“The MDP program not only helped me start my own business, it really changed my life. It made me more confident in myself and my abilities,” Butler said. She said her plan for the future is to start her own clothing line.
“I would encourage both current business owners and entrepreneurs to take part in the MDP because the more you know, the better chance for success,” Butler said. She also advises people to research the business they’re interested in and get all the help they can. “Be persistent and follow your dreams,” she adds.
