Industrial Fire School burns for 42nd year

More than 520 firefighters and safety personnel are attending the 42nd Annual Industrial Fire School this week at the Brayton Fire Training Field.

Many of these students will become some of the world’s first emergency responders certified in the latest industrial firefighting and hazardous material control techniques and standards as prescribed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

The Industrial Fire Training School, conducted by the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX), is currently the only firefighting school where emergency responders can achieve these Industrial Firefighting certifications.

NFPA standards are recognized internationally for firefighting and hazardous material control qualifications and are the foremost education standards in emergency response.

“The certifications show that these firefighters have received the education they need to face the challenges presented within their industrial plants and facilities.” said Chief Les Bunte, director of TEEX’s Emergency Services Training Institute. “Meeting national standards, these firefighters will now be able to go into any industrial complex and be recognized for their capabilities.”

More than 200 highly qualified guest instructors and speakers from industrial and manufacturing firms train students through the extensive classroom and hands-on exercises. Many of these instructors donate their time, services and expenses to ensure that firefighters are adequately prepared to respond to various industrial emergencies.

Training is conducted at the Brayton Fire Training Field, recognized as the world’s largest live-fueled fire training facility with 132 “props” or specific training sites. The props are life-sized combustible replicas, representing everything from oil tankers to refineries.

TEEX, a part of The Texas A&M University System, offers hands-on, customized training, technical assistance and technology transfer services impacting Texas and beyond. TEEX programs include fire, homeland security, law enforcement, public works, safety and health, search and rescue and technology transfer.
