Center offers solutions to improve employee performance

The Knowledge Engineering Center (KEC), a new center within the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX), focuses on providing companies with innovative solutions to improve employee performance, thus improving companies’ bottom lines. KEC received approval from the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents on May 28.

“KEC performs workforce assessment for organizations and then develops programs to increase employee knowledge and performance through training via the Internet, an intranet, CD-ROM or hand-held devices,” says Lesa Hill, KEC Associate Director. “KEC clients have access to information technology products and other services to improve performance throughout their organizations,” she added.

The goal of KEC is to provide cost-effective knowledge information technology products and services for integration into Internet and telecommunications infrastructures. KEC focuses on applying state-of-the-art interactive courseware, performance support systems and management support systems. Distance learning solutions are also designed using an open-system environment that allows for an increase in the level of training system complexity as client needs evolve.

KEC is the applied branch of the Texas A&M University Cognition and Instructional Technologies Laboratories (CITL). The CITL, directed by Dr. Andrew Stricker and Associate Director Betty Shea, provides applied cognitive science research and development for corporate, state, federal, military and academic clients.

Some of the projects KEC is working on include:

  • An online course for physicians on how to evaluate the performance of medical students for Scott & White and the Texas A&M University Health Science Center
  • An online Equipment Load & Tie Down course for TEEX Public Sector Training Division and TXDOT
  • A web-based program to tutor South San Antonio ISD students on math-related problem-solving skills.
