The Texas Engineering Extension Service is a proud sponsor of the Texas Skills USA Championships on April 12-15 at the Fort Worth Convention Center. More than 5,000 high school students and their advisers and parents will attend the annual state contest of the Texas SkillsUSA-VICA. Also attending will be Lt. Gov. Rick Perry, Texas legislators, TEEX representatives, industry representatives and school administrators.
Student members of Texas SkillsUSA-VICA are enrolled in trade and industrial education programs in high schools across the state. The annual state contest draws the state's top students in technology education programs, which are structured to enable students to enter the workplace with marketable skills and/or go on to post-secondary education.
Students competing in the State Championships have already won at their district or regional levels. During the State Championships, students compete in 51 skills contests, 25 leadership competitions, and 51 written technical information tests. Further, thousands of student exhibits are judged and open to the public for viewing on Friday, April 14.
In addition to the contests and competitions, conference highlights include a VIP luncheon and tour, scholarship auction, drawing for a Jeep Wrangler, career exposition, election and installation of state officers, and the awards ceremony.
This the first year that the Texas Skills USA Championships have been sponsored by TEEX, a member of The Texas A&M University System and a state agency that conducts workforce training for more than 120,000 workers each year. TEEX is approved by the State Board for Educator Certification as a provider of Continuing Professional Education in a wide variety of subjects, including all areas of career and technology education, mathematics, science, youth violence and substance abuse, integrating technology into educational practices, and linking business/industry with schools.
TEEX and Texas SkillsUSA-VICA are committed to assuring that Texas has a skilled workforce to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
