Course Description

This five-day STCW Basic Training course is comprised of four U.S. Coast Guard (USCG)-approved courses: Personal Survival Techniques, First Aid & CPR, Personal Safety and Social Responsibility and Basic Marine Firefighting.

This training is required of seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity onboard ship, on the business of that ship as part of the ship’s complement with designated safety, or on pollution prevention duties in the operation of the ship.

The course is designed to meet or exceed the mandatory minimum requirements as set forth in Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) code, Chapter VI, Section A-VI/1, Tables A-VI/1-1, A-VI/11-3 and A-VI/1-4 respectively.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Completion Requirements

Course Attire/Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) 

  • For field exercises, TEEX will provide participants PPE compliant to the Level 4 requirements in the ESTI Student Safety Manual.
  • Participants are required to participate in hands-on activities utilizing Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and therefore must be clean shaven while attending class. Facial hair must not be present where the SCBA mask seal contacts the skin. Mustaches and normal sideburns are permitted.
  • For classroom activities, participants must wear full length pants, closed-toe shoes, and short sleeve / long sleeve shirts (no sleeveless shirts).

U.S. Coast Guard Requirement

All participants attending a U.S. Coast Guard approved course are required to provide a photo ID on the first day of class. See the Participant Handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines. 

Attendance Requirements

Class attendance is an essential part of the education process and participants in TEEX courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. This course requires participants to attend 100% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion.
