Executive Skills Series Exercising Leadership to Facilitate Adaptive Change

NFA logoIn this course, students will learn the adaptive leadership model and how the model relates to being in an authority role and exercising leadership. Both adaptive and technical challenges will be examined in order to develop understanding of the differences between them, along with disequilibrium as a necessary element in accomplishing adaptive change.


Students will also be introduced to the functions of holding an authority role within their organization. They will be taught to recognize where their authority comes from, what the boundaries of their authority are, and what can compromise their authority. This forms the foundation for the students to recognize the distinctions between acting as an authority figure and exercising leadership to effect change within their organizations.


Additionally, students will examine two models for managing change: Analysis, Planning, Implementation and Evaluation (APIE) (a structural approach), and Bridges’ Transition Model (a psychological approach). Students will also be introduced to the Four P’s component of Bridges’ Transition Model for facilitating change.


The purpose of the “Executive Skills Series: Exercising Leadership to Facilitate Adaptive Change” (ESS: ELFAC) course is to provide skills that individuals in positions of authority can use to exercise leadership when confronted with adaptive challenges.

Suggested Audience

All of the executive skills series courses consists of fire and emergency service personnel in positions of authority who have an opportunity to exercise leadership. At a minimum, the students should be assigned to a supervisory level position, such as Company Officer (CO).
