Knowing how to shoot well is an important requirement for police firearms instructors, but they must also know how to teach others to shoot and handle firearms. This course will help you develop the additional knowledge, skills, and techniques needed to organize and teach firearms courses. Participants will learn to diagnose and correct student weaknesses, analyze and score targets, design and run courses of fire, and properly document police firearms training. Participants will be able to develop and implement comprehensive firearms training programs.

Responsibly training patrol officers on how to deploy patrol rifles is of the utmost importance to ensure they can deploy with speed and fire with precision while maintaining safety and accountability. This course teaches participants how to effectively instruct principles of marksmanship, rifle nomenclature, and operation. Emphasis will be placed on teaching weapons manipulation and training personnel to fight with commonly configured patrol rifles. Although this course is based on the AR-15/M-4/M-16 weapons platform, other systems will be discussed.

Online LET572 Firearms Proficiency Officer Update
Not all law enforcement agencies in Texas are large enough, nor can they necessarily afford, to train a firearms instructor. TCOLE 218.9 Continuing Firearms Proficiency Requirements went into effect February 1, 2020 and grants provisions for an agency or entity to designate a firearms proficiency officer.No definition of a firearms proficiency officer is given nor does the rule state the designated proficiency officer needs to be a certified firearms instructor. Section 218.9 sets minimum standards for annual firearms proficiency and the standards for documentation of those proficiencies.This course of instruction is designed to teach an individual designated by their agency as a firearms proficiency officer the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) rules for designing and documenting annual firearms qualification for their respective agency when no trained firearms instructor is available.
