Course Description

Possible domestic violence situation; male with closed fist facing female with hand open shielding faceDomestic violence and sexual assault are two crimes that the state of Texas is dedicated to fighting. Often, the first person a survivor of domestic violence or sexual assault encounters following an assault is law enforcement personnel. With the knowledge gained in this course, officers and other first responders will be better equipped to recognize and provide resources where they are most needed.

This course meets Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) requirements Sexual Assault Course #3201.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Completion Requirements

  • The mandatory completion/duration period for this eCourse is 90 days from the registration date.
  • Participants will have three attempts to pass the final examination.
  • To complete this course, you are required to have a computer with internet access.

Online Course Technical Requirements

To successfully complete this online course, you should have access to a computer with the following system requirements:

  • Computer tower or laptop
    • Note: The use of a tablet is not recommended and may result in connectivity issues.
  • Broadband or high-speed internet connection
    • Recommended: Wired connection with at least 2.0 Mbps bandwidth (bi-directional, i.e. sending and receiving)

Attendance Requirements

To meet attendance requirements, participants must review each training module and complete all required course assignments, activities, quizzes, and/or end of course exam.

Participants in a TCOLE credit course must complete the class in its entirety to receive TCOLE credit.

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Explain the history of and laws related to domestic violence and sexual assault.
  • Describe the dynamics involved in different types of interpersonal violence and why a multidisciplinary law enforcement approach to these dynamics is appropriate.
  • Apply understanding of victimology and working with victims to domestic violence and sexual assault investigation.
  • Describe an effective call response for domestic violence and sexual assault.
  • Apply procedures and practices for a victim-centered, multidisciplinary investigation of domestic violence and sexual assault.
  • Summarize key information regarding forensic sexual assault exams.
  • Describe effective strategies for working with various populations when responding to and investigating domestic violence and sexual assault.
  • Explain key elements and considerations for coordinated community responses to sexual assault and domestic violence.

  • Law enforcement and non-commissioned personnel assigned to investigative tasks and duties such as crime scene investigators, fire investigators, detectives, medicolegal death investigators, patrol officers, corrections officers and forensic nurses
  • Non-governmental agency personnel and victim service providers
