Course Description

This 8-hour online Computer Based Training (CBT) course component is intended to provide Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) Task Force personnel with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform hazardous materials specialist functions for a US&R Task Force during a disaster or planned event. CBT course
participants will learn the roles and responsibilities of Hazardous Materials Specialist(s) (HMSs) and Hazmat Team Managers (HTMs) during the prepare, deploy, and demobilization phases of a US&R activation. Upon completion of the CBT, you will be able to take part in the Instructor-Led Training (ILT) component of the Hazardous Material Specialist course. Upon completion of the CBT and ILT Hazmat Specialist Courses the participants will be able to successfully perform the duties of a Hazardous Material Specialist for a US&R Team.

Prerequisites

Participants must complete the general training requirements identified in the National Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) Response System’s Training Program Administration Manual (TPAM) (current edition) prior to attending this course.

Attendance Requirements

To meet attendance requirements, participants must review
each training module and complete all required course assignments, activities,
quizzes, and/or end of course exam.

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  • • Describe the evolution of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) Hazardous Material (Hazmat) Specialist (HMS) mission and the ability for a US&R Task Force (TF) to operate in a contaminated environment.
  • • Describe the responsibilities of FEMA US&R HMS and Hazmat Team Managers (HTM) in the pre-incident phase.
  • • Describe the actions and responsibilities of the FEMA US&R HTMs and HMSs during the response phase
  • • Describe the responsibilities of FEMA US&R TF HTMs and HMSs during the demobilization and return to readiness phases.

This course is designed for personnel who desire to be or are active Hazmat Specialist(s) or Hazmat Manager(s) on State or National Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) Task Force
