Course Description

TEEX OSHA Training Institute Education Center LogoThe Principles of Ergonomics (OSHA #2255) course covers the use of ergonomic principles to recognize, evaluate, and control workplace conditions that cause or contribute to musculoskeletal and nerve disorders. Course topics include work physiology, anthropometry, musculoskeletal disorders, use of video display terminals, and risk factors such as vibration, temperature, material handling, repetition, and lifting and patient transfers in health care. Course emphasis is on industrial case studies covering analysis and design of work stations and equipment workshops in manual lifting, and coverage of current OSHA compliance policies and guidelines. Upon course completion, students will have the ability to recognize work-related musculoskeletal and nerve disorders, assess employer’s ergonomic programs, and conduct ergonomic evaluations.

NOTE: This course is taught in English.

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Completion Requirements

Participant Must Provide

  • a photo identification on the first day of class. See the Participant Handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines.

Attendance Requirements

TEEX and the OSHA Training Institute (OTI) have an attendance policy that requires participants to fully attend an enrolled class in its entirety (100% of the course). We realize that extenuating circumstances may arise that would take a participant out of class and have a policy to handle those situations. If a participant misses less than 20% of the class, he/she may be able to perform makeup work equivalent to the class time missed. If 20% or more of the class is missed, the participant may attend a makeup course upon approval by TEEX’s OTI Education Center Director.

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Summarize basic ergonomic principles.
  • Describe effects of Workplace Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSD) on employees.
  • Recall physical stressors in the workplace.
  • Apply basic anthropometric principles.
  • Apply basic principles of workstation design.
  • Describe measurement techniques for analyzing MSD risks.
  • Recognize OSHA’s policy on ergonomics.
  • Describe task-specific control methods for one of eight areas.
  • Perform an ergonomics inspection.

Suggested Audience

This course is designed for individuals who desire the necessary knowledge and skills to help reduce work-related musculoskeletal and nerve disorders through application of ergonomic control measures and designs. Individuals benefiting from this course include, but are not limited to, ergonomic team leaders, safety specialists, industrial hygienists, healthcare professionals, engineers, line managers, and others with responsibilities to reduce workplace injuries.
