Course Description
This course prepares participants to be able to conduct high-risk vehicle stops using appropriate strategies and tactics for a variety of scenarios in challenging terrain and low-light conditions. As part of completing the course, participants will conduct application-based scenarios as a single officer, officer pair, and as part of an officer team.
This course is offered under the Keeping Texas Prepared – LAW Extension course suite and meets Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) requirements Traffic Stops Course #3404.
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for this course.
Enrollment Requirements
Participants enrolling in this course must meet one of the following employment statuses. Please ensure the affiliation on your student account reflects one of the following:
- Licensed or certified peace officer with a current commission employed by or attached to a law enforcement/investigative agency
- Civilian employed by a law enforcement/investigative agency conducting investigative tasks or duties
Participants will be contacted via email to confirm approval and admittance into the course.
Course Completion Requirements
Participant Must Provide
- A photo identification on the first day of class. See the Participant Handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines.
Physical Requirements
Physical participation is required, participant must be in good physical condition and able to complete traffic stops in different terrain environments and in low-light conditions.
Equipment
- Provide a suitable emergency vehicle in excellent working condition. It is recommended that each participant bring a vehicle to maximize scenario participation towards achieving successful course completion. If an agency needs participants to share a vehicle, submit the written request via email to [email protected] at least two weeks prior to class start date.
- Participant should wear appropriate attire for traffic stops
- Duty belt
- Sunglasses
- Billed Cap
Attendance Requirements
Class attendance is an essential part of the education process, and participants in TEEX courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. The course requires participants to attend a minimum of 100% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion. During the course, your instructor will review any additional attendance requirement, for example a field exercise that cannot be missed.
In some cases, make-up work will not be available (due to equipment/facility needs and/or safety/teamwork components or activity setup/facilitation/requirements).
Participants in a TCOLE credit eligible course must complete the class in its entirety to receive a TEEX Certificate of Completion and be reported for TCOLE credit.

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:
- Outline the steps and methods to prepare for and conduct high-risk vehicle stops to maintain safety of all individuals involved.
- Discuss tactical terminology, vehicle stop options and clearing techniques in high-risk vehicle stop situations as a single officer, officer pair, and as part of an officer team.
- Summarize appropriate situations, tactics, and strategies for intermediate vehicle stops in challenging terrain or low-light conditions.
- Apply tactical concepts and strategies and clearing techniques in high-risk vehicle stop situations while conducting simulated vehicle stop options as a single officer, officer pair, and as part of an officer team.
