Course Description

This course meets or exceeds the qualifications required for certification to Chapter 19, “Professional Qualifications for Hazardous Materials/WMD Safety Officers (NFPA 1072),” as described in National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 470, Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Standard for Responders (2022 Edition). Chapter 18, “Competencies for Hazardous Materials/WMD Safety Officers (NFPA 472)” of NFPA 470 will be used for curriculum development. Participants who successfully complete the course and pass the required certification exam and skill test will receive a National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (ProBoard) certification.

Pro Board Certification Requirements

For Pro Board certification, the following are the minimum certification requirements as defined by the NFPA Standards and the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service/Emergency Services Training Institute (TEEX/ESTI): National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) 470, Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Standard for Responders, Chapter 11, “Professional Qualifications for Hazardous Materials/WMD Technicians (NFPA 1072)” (2022 edition)

Or

  • NFPA 1072, Standard for Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Emergency Response Personnel Professional Qualifications, Chapter 7, “Hazardous Materials Technician” (2017 edition)

Or

  • NFPA 472, Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents, Chapter 7, “Competencies for Hazardous Materials Technicians” (2002, 2008, or 2013 editions)

Attendance Requirements

Participants Must Provide

  • a photo identification on the first day of class. See the  Participant Handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines.

Attendance Requirements

Class attendance is an essential part of the education process and participants in TEEX Courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. This course requires participants to attend 100% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion and to sit for the Pro Board certification exam.

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Analyze the incident by determining the magnitude of the event in terms of safety
  • Recognize exclusionary condition for the Hot Zone
  • Plan a response while identifying the safety precautions for potential tactics.
  • Review Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) selection, decontamination strategies, and medical procedures on site.
  • Prepare a Site safety and control plan
  • Deliver a Safety Briefing.
  • Monitor the safety of response personnel during the implementation phase of the incident, including communications, exposures, and physiological and psychological signs of stress.
  • Take corrective actions from deviations of safety protocols
  • Complete a safety report
  • Participate in the termination phase of the incident – Debriefing & Critique –

Suggested Audience

The target audience for this course is individuals from fire departments and industrial environments and emergency response personnel who have been charged with the safety function at a HazMat/WMD incident and have been trained to the technician level.

Course Attire / Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

For Classroom Activities, participants must wear full length pants, closed-toe shoes, and short sleeve / long sleeve shirts (no sleeveless shirts).
