Course Description

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires drivers to complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT), including formal classroom instruction as well as behind-the-wheel (BTW) training before taking the Commercial Driver License (CDL) skills test. This ELDT course provides a comprehensive overview of federally required knowledge and skills for commercial driving through a combination of classroom instruction and practical driving exercises with a specific focus on school buses and other passenger buses. It meets all FMCSA requirements and covers all necessary range and road maneuvers for Class A and Class B licenses with passenger (P) and school bus (S) endorsements.

Prerequisites

  • Be at least 18 years of age 
  • Hold a valid Driver License 
  • Hold a valid Class A or B Commercial Learner Permit (CLP) with (P) Passenger and (S) School Bus endorsements. To learn more, Click Here.

  • Must have a valid DOT Medical Card (unless exempted)

Attendance Requirements

To meet attendance requirements, participants must review each training module and complete all required course assignments, activities, quizzes, and/or end of course exam.

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Discuss basic operations for drivers of commercial vehicles.
  • Discuss practices for safe operation of a commercial vehicle under various conditions.
  • Discuss higher-level skills to avoid potential hazards.
  • Discuss other aspects of operating a commercial vehicle that do not involve physically driving.
  • Discuss safe operation of a passenger vehicle.
  • Discuss safe operation of a school bus.
  • Perform basic maneuvers and procedures on a controlled range.
  • Perform higher-level CMV operations on a public roadway.
