Course Description
The WMD/Terrorism Awareness for Emergency Responders course provides a basic awareness of Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive (CBRNE) hazards; how to use the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG); and how to prepare individuals to lessen further injuries or property losses. Awareness-level training does not certify a responder to perform ongoing operations at an incident.
This course focuses on training responders to meet the requirements established in Chapter 4 Competencies for Hazardous Materials/WMD Awareness Level Personnel (NFPA 472)” and Chapter 5 “Professional Qualifications for Hazardous Materials/WMD Awareness Level Personnel (NFPA 1072)” of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 470, Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Standard for Responders (2022 edition). This course also covers Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response, 29 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) §1910.120(q)(6)(i), and the National Infrastructure Protection Plan (NIPP), NIPP 2013: Partnering for Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience.

There are no prerequisites for this course.
Course Completion Requirements
In order to complete this course, you must have
- internet connection (broadband connection recommended)
- current web browser (i.e., Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari, etc.) To prevent issues during your online class be sure that your web browser is updated to the latest version available.
- current versions of Adobe Acrobat Reader
- This course cannot be done on a mobile device
Attendance Requirements
To meet attendance requirements, participants must review each training module and complete all required course assignments, activities, quizzes, and end of course exam.
- Take the pre-Test. You have one attempt; no passing score is required.
- Complete all modules of the AWR-160-W course
- Participants must complete the course activities and quizzes at the end of each module to move to the next module.
- Pass the Post-Test with a 70% or higher. You will have 5 attempts.
If participants cannot pass the end-of-course exam after five (5) attempts, the participant will be disenrolled from the course. These participants will need to enroll in a future course offering and meet the course requirements.
Recommended
There are no prerequisites for this course. However, it is highly recommended that participants complete:
- IS-100.a – Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS) or equivalent
- IS-700.b – An Introduction to the National Incident Management System
Upon successful completion, you will be able to:
- Identify terms and concepts that are applicable to the prevention and deterrence of terrorist and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, or Explosive (CBRNE) incidents.
- Explain Hazardous Materials (HazMat), hazard classes, and response information using the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG).
- Explain explosives, indicators of such an attack, methods of delivery, potential sources, and safely responding to an explosion incident.
- Explain chemical agents used as Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), indicators of such an attack, methods of delivery, potential sources, and safely responding to a chemical agent incident.
- Explain biological agents used as Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), indicators of such an attack, methods of delivery, potential sources, and safely responding to a biological agent incident
- Explain radiological materials and nuclear weapons used as Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), indicators of such attacks, methods of delivery, potential sources, and safely responding to incidents involving radiological materials or nuclear weapons.

At the completion of this course, you will be required to pass a comprehensive final exam in order to print a certificate of completion.
