Course Description
This course will fill the need of addressing the role of a Hazardous Materials (HazMat) officer (HMO). An HMO Shall be the person designated by the Incident Commander (IC) to be responsible for directing and coordinating all operations involving HazMats/Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) within the designated hazard control zones.
Prerequisites
Pro board Certification Requirements
Participants pursuing Pro Board Certification must provide proof of NFPA 470 Technician Competencies, Chapter 8, or NFPA 1072 Professional Qualifications for Technician (2017 edition), or NFPA 472 Competencies for Hazmat Technician responder (2002, 2008, or 2013 editions) dates prior to the last day of class. The documentation must meet the certification office requirements
Course Completion Requirements
Participants must provide information for all required fields, including their U.S. citizenship/permanent resident information, in addition to meeting all other attendance and course completion requirements. If this information is not provided, the participant will be considered incomplete and will not receive a certificate of completion.
Course Attire/Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- For classroom activities, participants must wear full length pants, closed-toe shoes, and short sleeve/long sleeve shirts (no sleeveless shirts)
Pro Board Certification Testing
- Participants are required to provide a photo ID at the time of Pro Board testing.
Participants Must Provide
- A photo identification on the first day of class. See the participant handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines.
Attendance Requirements
Class attendance is an essential part of the education process and participants in TEEX Courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. This course requires participants to attend 100% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion and to sit for the Pro Board certification exam.
Upon successful completion, you will be able to:
- Apply the role of an HMO By analyzing the HazMat/WMD Incident
- Initiate planning the response to a HazMat/WMD incident within NIMS/ICS
- Implement the planned response to a HazMat/WMD incident using an IAP
- Evaluate the progress of the IAP in mediating the impact of the HazMat/WMD Incident
- Complete a risk-based response tactical worksheet at a HazMat/WMD incident while acting as the HMO within the IC system
Suggested Audience
Personnel who respond to emergencies involving Hazardous Materials (HazMat)/Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) for the purpose of analyzing the incident, selecting appropriate PPE, decontamination procedures, medical surveillance, and implementing tactics to operate within the Hazmat group while monitoring and preserving the safety of the responders and keeping the goal of mitigating the incident.
