Course Description

TEEX OSHA Training Institute Education Center LogoThe OSHA Guide to Industrial Hygiene (OSHA #521) course covers industrial hygiene practices and related OSHA regulations and procedures. Course topics include recognition, evaluation, and control of chemical, physical, biological and ergonomic hazards, Permissible Exposure Limits (PEL), OSHA health standards, respiratory protection, engineering controls, OSHA sampling protocols and strategies, and workplace health program elements. The course features workshops in health hazard recognition, OSHA health standards and use of sampling equipment. Upon course completion, students will have the ability to recognize basic industrial hygiene principles and practices, identify characteristics of common air contaminants, locate PELs, perform basic industrial hygiene calculations, and determine methods for hazard control and abatement.

NOTE: This course is taught in English.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Completion Requirements

Participant Must Provide

  • a photo identification on the first day of class. See the Participant Handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines.

Attendance Requirements

TEEX and the OSHA Training Institute (OTI) have an attendance policy that requires participants to fully attend an enrolled class in its entirety (100% of the course). We realize that extenuating circumstances may arise that would take a participant out of class and have a policy to handle those situations. If a participant misses less than 20% of the class, he/she may be able to perform makeup work equivalent to the class time missed. If 20% or more of the class is missed, the participant may attend a makeup course upon approval by TEEX’s OTI Education Center Director.

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Recognize basic industrial hygiene principles.
  • Recognize characteristics of common types of air contaminants.
  • Recognize requirements of 29 CFR 1910.1000.
  • Recognize potential substance-specific hazardous exposures, including silica.
  • Recognize air sampling methods.
  • Screen for gases and vapors using a detector tube and detector tube pump.
  • Recognize types of controls for health hazards.
  • Determine industrial ventilation principles when evaluating compliance with ventilation standards.
  • Recognize respiratory protection requirements.
  • Screen for potential noise exposure.
  • Recognize possible exposures to common biological agents.
  • Recognize exposures to Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSD).
  • Classify permit-required confined spaces per 29 CFR 1910.146.
  • Recognize selected HAZWOPER standard requirements.
  • Recognize possible violations related to proper recordkeeping practices.
  • Apply industrial hygiene principles while evaluating potential hazards within a workplace.
