Course Description

SFST Officer conducting test on driverHaving proper skills to conduct a sobriety test is essential to successful DWI/DUI traffic enforcement. This course prepares officers to instruct the Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) course to their peers. Participants will experience hands-on training exercises and simulated alcohol “wet lab” workshops. Successful graduates are able to teach the SFST course.

This course meets Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) requirements for SFST Instructor Course #1016.

Prerequisites

Participants enrolling in this course must complete the following course prior to attendance:

If you are claiming a course equivalent from another training provider, you must upload the certificate of successful completion and TCOLE training record to your TEEX student portal within 48 hours of registration. If you completed the course requirement with TEEX, a TEEX employee will verify that you completed the course and received a passing grade.

Enrollment Requirements

Participants enrolling in this course must meet the following employment status:

  • Currently commissioned as a peace officer with basic SFST experience

Participants will be contacted via email to confirm approval and admittance into the course.

Course Completion Requirements

  • A proficiency exam will be given to all participants the first day of class.
  • All participants are required to pass the proficiency exam to continue the course.

Participant Must Provide

  • A photo identification on the first day of class. See the Participant Handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines.

Attendance Requirements

Class attendance is an essential part of the education process, and participants in TEEX courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. The course requires participants to attend a minimum of 100% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion. During the course, your instructor will review any additional attendance requirement, for example a field exercise that cannot be missed.

This course will have varying daily start and end times throughout the course offering. In some cases, make-up work will not be available (due to equipment/facility needs and/or safety/teamwork components or activity setup/facilitation/requirements).

Participants in a TCOLE credit eligible course must complete the class in its entirety to receive a TEEX Certificate of Completion and be reported for TCOLE credit.

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Recognize driving behaviors and other indicators commonly exhibited by impaired drivers
  • Outline knowledge, attitudes, and skills in detecting the impaired driver
  • Outline observations of detections and descriptions of the impaired driver
  • Outline the tasks and decisions involved in the DWI detection process
  • Recognize the magnitude and scope of DWI-related crashes, injuries, deaths, property loss, and other social aspects of the DWI problem
  • Describe the deterrent effects of DWI enforcement
  • Describe the legal environment relevant to DWI enforcement and use of the three SFSTs
  • Recognize typical clues of alcohol impairment that may be detected during face-to-face contact with DWI suspects
  • Perform the appropriate administrative procedures for the divided attention psychophysical tests
  • Perform the appropriate administrative procedures for the HGN test
  • Recognize typical clues of alcohol impairment that may be seen during administration of the SFSTs
  • Outline the DWI prosecution requirements and their relevance to DWI arrest reporting

Note: Live Online Instructor-Led (webinar) courses are not eligible for TCOLE credit.

  • Participants successfully completing this course will also need to meet TCOLE requirements set in rule 221.33 before instructing a SFST class.
