Course Description

Intermediate Collision Investigation PhotoExperienced collision investigators seeking to master the complexities of analyzing traffic collisions and reconstruct the events should attend this course. The course expands on the fundamentals of crash investigation with special emphasis on crash reconstruction. Critical thinking skills are sharpened to enable the trained crash investigator to analyze and understand evidence found at the crash scene. Momentum, principle direction of force, Delta-V, vector analysis, and time/distance are highlighted in this course. Case studies, many based on crash tests with known quantities as a guide, are used to illustrate major learning points.

This course meets Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) requirements for Course #78017.

Prerequisites

Participants enrolling in this course must complete the following courses prior to attendance:

If you are claiming a course equivalent, you must upload the document to your TEEX student portal within 48 hours of registration. If you completed the course requirement with TEEX, a TEEX employee will verify that you completed the course and received a passing grade.

Please upload a copy of your prerequisite requirements within 48 hours of registration to your MyTEEX Student Portal. If you are unable to upload the documents you can email them to [email protected]. The preferred document naming convention is “Last Name, First Name – Document.”

Participants will be contacted via email to confirm approval and admittance into the course.

Course Completion Requirements

Participant Must Provide

  • A photo identification on the first day of class. See the Participant Handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines.
  • Laptop or tablet
  • Scientific calculator (Recommended: TI-30Xa)
  • Measuring tape
  • Mechanical or wood pencil(s) with a lead measurement of .5mm
  • TEEX formula cards provided in prerequisite courses
  • TEEX traffic templates provided in prerequisite courses

Note: A phone is not considered a sufficient replacement for a laptop or tablet for this class.

Attendance Requirements

Class attendance is an essential part of the education process, and participants in TEEX courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. The course requires participants to attend a minimum of 100% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion. During the course, your instructor will review any additional attendance requirement, for example a field exercise that cannot be missed.

In some cases, make-up work will not be available (due to equipment/facility needs and/or safety/teamwork components or activity setup/facilitation/requirements).

Participants in a TCOLE credit eligible course must complete the class in its entirety to receive a TEEX Certificate of Completion and be reported for TCOLE credit.

If you have additional questions, please refer to the TEEX Participant Handbook.

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Refresher mathematics
  • Time and distance equations
  • Conservation of linear momentum
  • Vector analysis and Delta V
  • Vehicle behavior in collisions
  • Lamp examinations
  • Post-impact drag factor and spin analysis
  • Driver perception and reaction and collision impacts
  • Crash data retrieval
  • Reconstruction analysis projects

Suggested Audience

  • Experienced collision investigators seeking new approaches to the complexities of analyzing traffic collisions

Continuing Education And Professional Credits

Note: Live Online Instructor-Led (webinar) courses are not eligible for TCOLE credit.

  • 80.00 hours – Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE)
