Course Description
Fundamentals of Rural Firefighting is a five-day course designed to equip participants with essential knowledge and hands-on experience in rural firefighting operations. Throughout the course, participants will engage in live fire scenarios to develop critical decision-making skills in dynamic environments. They will learn how to assess fire scenes, establish an Incident Command System, and create an effective Incident Action Plan while evaluating risks in real-time.
Additionally, the course covers strategies for managing fire behavior, deploying hose lines efficiently, and responding to vehicle fires and bulk transport incidents. Participants will also practice search and rescue techniques, use thermal imaging cameras (TICs), and explore electric vehicle (EV) fire response.
Upon completion, participants can apply the objectives learned toward certifications with the State Firefighters’ and Fire Marshals’ Association of Texas (SFFMA).

Registration Process
Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service in cooperation with the Texas A&M Forest Service has aligned the payment process for annual schools with all other requests for tuition assistance under the House Bill 2604 program and TIFMAS training grants. Texas A & M Forest Service voucher number or a request ID # is no longer a valid Purchase Order number. It will be denied if used as a form of payment.
The process will follow this pattern: Registration with payment – Apply for tuition assistance & obtain TAMFS approval – Attend training – Complete the reimbursement process.
