Course Description
This course will provide you with an awareness level understanding of how to identify hybrid and electric vehicles, safety concerns and differences associated with different manufacturers, and provide you guides and resources to determine safe interventions to incidents involving hybrid and electric vehicles. The following 4 modules will provide examples, scenarios, resources, and knowledge checks to allow the user to practice the theories being taught. Upon course completion, a final exam will be scenario-based and will assess your ability to identify the appropriate vehicle, identify hazard locations, and choose appropriate tactics to mitigate the hazards in a safe and proficient manner. Completion of this course will provide you with a certificate for 2.5 continuing education hours (0.25 CEU hours). JPR’s: 1001: 4.3.3, 4.3.5, 4.3.7, 5.4.1

Attendance Requirements
To meet attendance requirements, participants must review each training module and complete all required course assignments, activities, quizzes, and/or end of course exam.
Upon successful completion, you will be able to:
- Terminal Objective: Upon the successful completion of this module, participants will be able to collect the information to consider when responding to an EV fire, such as the type of vehicle and the internal layout of the specific vehicle.
- Enabling Objectives:
- 1. Identify the correct make and model of an EV using badging, marking, and other forms of manufacturer identification.
- 2. Demonstrate the use of manufacturers’ emergency response guides provided by EV companies.
- 3. Identify the layout of the high-boltage system within both full EVs and Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV).
- 4. Observe how to approach and secure a high-voltage vehicle when involved in a collision.
- 5. Compare the hazards/challenges of extrication on Electric Vehicles/Hybrid Electric Vehicles (EV/HEV).
- 6. Contrast the difference in designs and layouts between EV/HEV manufacturers.
- 7. Define a thermal runaway event, including description of its characteristics.
- 8. Identify the potential health risks associated with products of combustion of lithium-ion batteries.
- 9. Establish control zones and protective actions for provided scenarios during Electric Vehicle/Hybrid Electric Vehicle (EV/HEV) incident responses.
- 10. Identify the appropriate methods of water supply to extinguish EV/HEV fires.
- 11. Establish the appropriate approach to an EV/HEV fire to ensure health and safety from known hazards.
- 12. Identify the appropriate tatics to approach EV/HEV fire.
- 13. Select the appropriate emergency response guide provided by EV manufacturers in order to access shutoff and high-voltage battery locations.
- 14. Differentiate between several approaches to access high-voltage batteries in EVs/HEVs to assess for thermal runaway.
