Course Description
This is an online asynchronous course consisting of five modules, with an estimated length of 3 hours.
This course will provide you with an awareness level understanding of the fundamental components, terminology, hazards, fire scene approaches, storage and disposal practices, and public education needs related to lithium-ion batteries. The five modules will provide examples, scenarios, resources, and quizzes to allow you to practice module content.
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for this course.
Course Completion Requirements
Participants must provide information for all required fields, including their U.S. citizenship/permanent resident information, in addition to meeting all other attendance and course completion requirements. If this information is not provided, the participant will be considered incomplete and will not receive a certificate of completion.
In order to receive a certificate of completion, the participant must complete all modules. Participants have 180 days from the registration date to complete the course.
Online Course Technical Requirements
Participants must provide:
- Desktop computer or laptop (Note: The use of a tablet is not recommended and may result in connectivity issues.)
- Broadband or high-speed internet connection
- Recommended: Wired connection with at least 2.0 Mbps bandwidth (bi-directional, i.e., sending and receiving)
- Alternative: Wireless (Wi-Fi) connection (Note: The use of a MiFi or mobile hotspot is not recommended and may result in connectivity issues.)
- Current version of web browser
- Recommended: Mozilla Firefox 130 or higher, Google Chrome 130 or higher
- Alternatives: Microsoft Edge 130 or higher, Safari 16 or higher [as applicable] (Note: Microsoft Edge and Safari are not among our tested browsers for this course. You may experience layout, navigation, and/or tracking issues. Please utilize one of the recommended browsers.)
- Adobe Acrobat Reader 24 or higher
Attendance Requirements
To meet attendance requirements, participants must review each module and complete all required course assignments, activities, quizzes, and end-of-course exam.
Upon successful completion, you will be able to:
- Define foundational terminology and components related to lithium-ion batteries.
- Recognize the risks and hazards created by lithium-ion batteries and the by-products of thermal runaway.
- List best practices first responders should follow to reduce the risks posed by lithium-ion batteries as secondary emergency incidents.
- Demonstrate understanding of laws and best practices for the storage and the disposal of lithium-ion batteries in an effort to educate the responder’s community.
