Course Description

Stop sign The Work Zone Traffic Control for Contractor’s Responsible Person course provides managers and supervisors responsible for setting up and operating construction work zones on State-owned roadways with required training recognized by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The course provides TxDOT compliant training in basic work zone traffic control set-up and covers the importance of complying with the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and all relative TxDOT standards. Training is valid for 4 years from the date of completion.

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Completion Requirements

Participant Must Provide

  • a photo identification on the first day of class. See the Participant Handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines.

Attendance Requirements

Class attendance is an essential part of the education process and participants in TEEX courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. This course requires participants to attend a minimum of 80% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion. During the course, your instructor will review any additional attendance requirements, for example a field exercise that cannot be missed

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  •    Demonstrate knowledge of the responsibilities of a contractor’s responsible person.
  •    Explain the purpose of and requirements for temporary traffic control according to Federal and State regulations.
  •    Describe the responsibilities of the contractor’s responsible person related to safety, supervision, temporary traffic control, and work zone inspections.
  •    Apply traffic control devices for various work zone situations through proper selection and placement.
  •    Explain how to implement and enforce an internal traffic control plan.
  •    Explain inspection requirements and procedures related to work zones and traffic control devices.
  •   Explain the use of TxDOT’s barricade and construction plan sheets and traffic control standard plan sheets.
  •   Explain requirements and practices for addressing pedestrian and cyclist concerns in work zone planning.
  •   Select proper treatments for various pavement drop-off conditions.
  •   Identify documentation for temporary traffic control activities and protocol for crash incidents.

Suggested Audience

This course is designed for contractor supervisors responsible for the installation, maintenance, and removal of work zones.
