Course Description

Male inmate in jail cellThe Interacting with Veterans in a Jail Setting course introduces military culture, the unique experiences and mental health challenges faced by veterans, and how to apply trauma-informed communication and de-escalation techniques when interacting with others. This in-person course is designed to meet the legislative mandate established by SB 1563, in accordance with Chapter 1701 of the Texas Occupations Code.

This course meets Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) requirements Interacting with Veterans in Jail Setting Course #4902.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Attendance Requirements

Class attendance is an essential part of the education process, and participants in TEEX courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. The course requires participants to attend a minimum of 100% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion. During the course, your instructor will review any additional attendance requirement, for example a field exercise that cannot be missed.

In some cases, make-up work will not be available (due to equipment/facility needs and/or safety/teamwork components or activity setup/facilitation/requirements).

Participants in a TCOLE credit eligible course must complete the class in its entirety to receive a TEEX Certificate of Completion and be reported for TCOLE credit.

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Identify how military culture, deployments, and transition challenges shape veterans’ behavior and perception within a jail setting.
  • Recognize how trauma, mental health conditions, and comorbidity influence veteran behavior and increase risk for incarceration.
  • Recognize trauma-informed principles, triggers, and correctional practices that may unintentionally retraumatize veterans.
  • Apply veteran-specific communication and de-escalation strategies to manage conflict while maintaining safety and authority.

  • Other law enforcement professionals such as telecommunicators and peace officers
