Course Description

**PLEASE NOTE** This course has been approved by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to fulfill 20 credit hours in the following operator license area(s):

– Wastewater Operator License

wastewater operationsThe Basic Wastewater Operations course provides participants with an introduction to wastewater collection and treatment along with a brief review of the water cycle. The course covers sources and pretreatment of domestic waste as well as characteristics of wastewater. Experienced trainers guide the class through best practices and related standards utilizing classroom discussion and cover all associated laws specific to wastewater.

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Completion Requirements

Participant Must Provide

  • a photo identification on the first day of class. See the Participant Handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines.

Attendance Requirements

Class attendance is an essential part of the education process and participants in TEEX courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. This course requires participants to attend a minimum of 100% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion. During the course, your instructor will review any additional attendance requirements, for example a field exercise that cannot be missed.

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of protecting water resources in the State of Texas.
  • Describe the role of the wastewater treatment plant operator in pollution control.
  • Discuss appropriate wastewater treatment based on bacterial, physical, and chemical characteristics.
  • Discuss the proper treatment of wastewater based on its source.
  • Discuss the complexity of a wastewater collection system.
  • Discuss the essentials of preliminary treatment and flow measurement.
  • Recognize the importance of sedimentation and the factors that affect it.
  • Discuss the fundamentals of the activated sludge process.
  • Recognize the purpose of fixed-film biological processes.
  • Discuss appropriate methods of pond stabilization.
  • Discuss sludge digestion processes.
  • Recognize the methods of wastewater effluent disinfection commonly used in wastewater treatment plants.
  • Apply safety precautions to reduce the risk of accident or injury in the wastewater treatment plant environment.
  • Calculate problems related to basic wastewater operations.

Suggested Audience

This course is designed for public works personnel and new employees of a wastewater system.
