Course Description

**PLEASE NOTE** This course has been approved by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to fulfill 20 credit hours in the following operator license area(s):

man filling out documentThe Wastewater Treatment correspondence course provides participants with a review of the water cycle together with a general description of the responsibilities of wastewater system personnel. During the course, participants receive information specific to the regulation of wastewater dischargers and state rules and regulations for the licensing of wastewater system operators. In addition to those areas mentioned, formulas discussed are reviewed and applied to specific problems related to wastewater treatment, solids treatment and effluent disinfection procedures.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Completion Requirements

Participant Must Provide

  • A proctor during all examinations
  • Ability to acquire information on plant laboratory data, equipment and treatment units
  • Access to process control information from an activated sludge facility, a trickling filter facility, RBC facility, and a pond facility
  • Ability to perform a chlorine residual analysis
  • Access to plant record information, a Material Safety Data Sheet, and a microscope
  • A photo identification to the written test proctor at the time of exam administration. See the Participant Handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines

Items Needed for Course Testing/Assessment

  • Course must be completed within six months of start date
  • All course examinations must be proctored. When selecting a proctor, ensure they are not a spouse, family member, partner, fiance, or anyone residing in the same household. Additionally, a proctor cannot be currently enrolled in any distance learning course offered by the TEEX Water & Wastewater Program. In most cases, an immediate supervisor is selected to serve as a proctor. Other approved proctor options include, a licensed supervisor at work, a company training manager, a college proctor, or certified clergy. If an examination is not proctored, participants will not be eligible for TCEQ license credit hours.

Attendance Requirements

To meet attendance requirements, participants must complete each training module and required course assignments, activities, quizzes, and/or end of course exam within the required timeline.

Prior Training Courses or Knowledge

It is recommended, but not required, participants complete the Basic Wastewater Operations (WWW101) course and be employed by a Water System to ensure all class field exercises and assignments can be completed.

  • Describe processes used for the advanced treatment of wastewater.
  • Explain the process of sludge removal from the system.
  • Explain the processes used for the disinfection of wastewater.
  • Explain the use of laboratory data to control the treatment process.
  • Explain the importance of safety.
  • Solve utility calculations for wastewater treatment.

Suggested Audience

This course is designed for public works personnel and new employees of a wastewater treatment system.
