Course Description

The goal of this course is to educate firefighters and EMS personnel about their increased risk of developing cancer; encourage actions and behaviors to reduce or prevent exposure to occupational cancer hazards; encourage healthy lifestyle choices to further reduce cancer risk; and provide information about resources available to firefighters, EMS personnel, and their families following a cancer diagnosis.  

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Completion Requirements

Participants Must Provide

  • a photo identification on the first day of class. See the Participant Handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines.
  • PPE must be NFPA-approved. See the Student Safety Manual to review PPE requirements for level. 
  • Laptop or tablet to view student manual and exercises. 

Attendance Requirements

Class attendance is an essential part of the education process and participants in TEEX courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. This course requires participants to attend a minimum of 80% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion. During the course, your instructor will review any additional attendance requirements, for example a field exercise that cannot be missed

  • Why firefighters are at increased risk of cancer due to their work environment
  • Most common types of cancer that affect firefighters
  • Identifying the major routes of exposure to carcinogens for firefighters
  • Identifying actions and behaviors that reduce or prevent exposure to carcinogens
  • Recognizing the issues that accompany a cancer diagnosis
  • Recognize resources available to support firefighters who are diagnosed with cancer and how to access those resources
